SCHEDULE: Schedule and starting times are posted on the calendar. Shows always start at 9pm if there are four bands, and 10pm if there are three bands. Bands play on the hour. If you aren’t sure of your set time, first look at the calendar to double check. Headliners are listed first, which means they usually play at 12, so go backwards from there, 1 hour for each band. Of course, there are exceptions so be sure to clear that up when you book your show especially if you want to do something differently. Make sure to start on time and stop 15 – 20 minutes before the hour to allow time to tear down and let the next band set up. That’s a 40-45 minute set. If there is a change that needs to occur the night of the show for various reasons, please cooperate with the club and other bands and take one for the team if you have to.
PARKING/LOAD IN: You can load in from the street through the front door, or through the side gate from the parking lot behind Cream Vintage. There is designated parking for Hole in the Wall after 9pm in this lot. There is one parking spot beside the club in the alley off of Guadalupe, which is for loading and unloading only. Do not leave your vehicle there during your show.
PROMOTION: How your show goes and if you get asked back is very dependent on how much you promote the show. Please do not expect a built in crowd; some nights there may be one, but take every step to make sure you are letting everyone know when and where you are playing. ESPECIALLY weekends (Thursday through Saturday); if we give you a weekend spot it means we are relying on you to promote the show and bring friends out. Please do not play in Austin 2 weeks before or after your show (especially weekends, again), unless you are on a special residency. Playing too much (promoting too many shows) within a short amount of time will decrease your draw to each show. Bands that are good about all of the above will definitely be asked back.
Some ideas… Put up flyers in the club and around town, and hand them out in person. This is especially helpful if you hand out a CD with some of your music on it with the flyer (it can just be burned off your computer). E-mail us a link to a flyer and we will post it on our pages. Make a Facebook group. Try getting in touch with local radio like KVRX and KOOP 91.7, and KUT 90.5 to get the word out. Promote on your online profiles, send out texts… Do whatever you can to spread the word about your show and everyone will benefit. E-mail a press release to the media contacts listed below and any other media outlets on your mail list. And when you are onstage, we don’t expect you to promote your upcoming shows at other clubs, and we don’t expect you to promote your upcoming Hole shows from other clubs’ stages.
PRODUCTION: Pretty much all shows Sunday-Thursday are done in the front room, which has an on-stage PA, with mics and monitors. You should be able to run this simple PA yourself. It helps to have someone in the crowd to let you know if something’s too loud or quiet. Friday and Saturday shows are on the back stage (the big one) and have a sound person provided. The first band is the only band that normally has a sound check. The rest of the bands do plug-and-play line checks. If the headliner needs to sound check, it can be done before 7 if arranged in advance. If you are the first band playing on a weekend, please arrive an hour early to sound check to ensure that the rest of the night stays on schedule.
PA SPECS: The back stage PA is a stereo 4-way system with 2 EV 3-Way 18″ x10″ Mains and 4 Peavey 18″ subs. The mixer is 24 Channel Mackie with 4 monitor mixes on JBL 15″ wedges. All speakers are powered by QSC RMX 2450 Series power amps. Vocal mics are Shure 58s and Beta 58s. Drum mics are Audix D- Series and Shure Beta 52 kik mic. Bring your own DIs if you have a lot of direct input instruments.
PAYMENT: On weeknights (when shows are free), bands get 10% of the front 2 bar sales during their set after the door man is paid ($40 out of all the bands).
On weekends and shows with a cover, bands get 100% of the door after a small production cost.
Band payment can be collected at any time for up to 1 week after the show. You can pick the payment up from the front bar whenever the bar is open (3pm-2am). Just tell the bartender the name of your band and when you played and they will get your envelope. After 1 week, the money disappears, so make sure to pick it up before then!! The bar is very strict about this rule.
And just because you finished playing doesn’t mean you have to leave… Stick around and check out the rest of the bands!
